Chandra, a member of the Good Old Games (GOG) team, announced on the forums that Telltale Games’ catalog would be removed from the GOG store by May 27th, helping hammer the nails into the coffin of the defunct publisher.
For those that are somehow not in the know, Telltale Games was a studio and publisher that specialized in making adventure games. For years, the studio tried to follow the success of The Walking Dead: Season 1, but only succeeded in burning out many game developers and being financially mismanaged into the ground, closing in October of last year.
The end of the publisher brings the end to digital distribution of its games. The following games will be removed from GOG:
- The Wolf Among Us
- Tales from the Borderlands
- Batman: The Telltale Series
- Batman: The Enemy Within – The Telltale Series
- Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People series
- The Sam & Max series
- Marvel’s Guardian of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series
- Hector: Badge of Carnage
These were hardly the first removals Telltale games. In November of last year, Telltale’s takes on The Walking Dead, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future and its Monkey Island games were removed from Steam. Of course, since that article was written, those games were also taken off of other storefronts.
For now, it’s not known if Telltale’s catalog will be removed from other storefronts, but given the above, it wouldn’t be a surprise. There was a scare when Tales From the Borderlands, a Telltale developed game built on the Borderlands IP, was coincidentally removed from Steam hours before the GOG announcement. However, a representative of 2K Games told Eurogamer that they will be getting the game back up for sale. It’s unlikely that other games will be saved in the same way, though, seeing as 2K Games already held a stake in Tales From the Borderlands.
This is yet another case of the problem of game preservation. Telltale’s games, especially The Walking Dead, were a part of games culture and helped influence the nature of adventure games for years to come. With its loss, a big part of games history is also lost.
