There’s a new behavior going around that can potentially get you banned on Apex Legends called ’piggy backing’. Piggy-Backing involves players hanging around a squad of other experienced players, doing nothing, and still collecting XP to level up. Players basically joining a squad of higher level players just to do nothing during the match; not participating in the match whatsoever but getting rewards and XP due to their team mates efforts.

Respawn’s community manager said the studio has examined Apex Legends matches and has determined that they’ll issue temporary bans “for players that exhibit piggy-backing behaviour,” as well as permanent bans (if possible) in more extreme cases. As it relates to squad mates, piggy-backing seems to be something that goes on with or without others’ help, so its not easy to identify and rectify it using the same methods used for cheating.

After looking at the data and internal discussions, we’ve decided that in the future we’ll start instituting temp bans for players that exhibit piggy-backing behaviour and extreme cases could lead to a permanent ban”, the post reads. “This change will not be immediate but we wanted to give a heads up to players so you can adjust that behaviour.

Some players argued that the methods to stop this will not be enough as the minimum level of participation can still be used to Piggy-Back. Others argue the leveling system rewards the method and that is why some do it. Players have also suggested to tune the XP system such as reducing the amount of XP one gets from surviving and increasing the amount a player gets from killing and damage dealt. Yet others disagree with this, as the main point of a Battle Royale game is to survive the longest and win. By that logic, changing the amount of XP earned from that would make surviving pointless.

Whatever the case may be, if you are prone to use your friends or other experienced players you may know to level up and get rewards without doing your share of work; you better believe you’re on Respawn’s watch list. You should be careful.
