Sonic the Hedgehog has been in the news for its new film for all the wrong reasons. Now, Paramount is looking to right its wrongs. Rightfully so, considering this film was destined to fail the moment fans began meme-ing and ridiculing the 3D animation and other aspects of the film’s trailer.
It’s a little funny, considering how trivial a character’s art style is. Most games are praised for changing things up, like in Wind Waker, for example. Why can’t it be the same for a movie? Nevertheless, Sonic’s design outraged fans, and Paramount felt the hate. Director Jeff Fowler said today, “The message is loud and clear. You aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be.”
This is kinda nice, seeing as many companies would likely be dismissive of criticism in favor of keeping up with the tides of production. Fowler went as far as saying “Thank you for the support. And the criticism.” That’s a big move following the hate that came out after the character design was revealed. Look, there were two options: keep things the same, or switch it up for better press and excitement. If you’re looking to make this a series of films, there’s only one right option.
Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog and Jim Carrey as Sonic’s nemesis Doctor Robotnik, alongside James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally, and Neal McDonough. That’s quite a few big names, which is another reason to keep audiences happy. Sony tried to make this movie in 2013, but it fell through, eventually landing in Paramount’s lap in 2017. That’s a lot of hassle, but Sonic is a recognizable character if there ever was one.
