Gone Home is one of those experiences in games that I will never forget, but not because it was a perfect game or even a game at all. It is close to what many are calling art games. It is an experience of romping around someone’s house looking for information, without all those pesky lawyers having to get involved and restraining orders. I could and would happily spoil the semblance of a plot that there happens to be. It is paper thin, but fun.
Upon first glance, I and a few others would think Gone Home was a horror game, but this I will spoil. It is not a horror game, far from it, in fact. The setting of the dark mansion surrounded by thunder only sets up for the mysterious situation you find yourself in. The setting only sets you up to assume the worse possible presuppositions and nothing more.
Gone Home is currently free and DRM-free over on Humble Bundle as part of the Humble Trove until May 3rd. For those that do not know, the Humble Trove is where you download a .zip file of a game, keep it, and play it where ever you want. However, if you are subscribed to “Humble Monthly” for $12 a month, you will receive access to the Trove with 60+ games available. This includes Tokyo 42, Super Meat Boy, Limbo, The Sexy Brutale, Orwell, Soma, Tacoma, Hacknet, and several others. Nonetheless, without a subscription, you can still receive Gone Home free and DRM-Free to keep forever.
If you do not like Gone Home, you can delete it once you are done and never touch it again. It is a short three hours of wandering around a dark and creaking house, wondering what has happened. Why is it empty? Why when you arrived home from a trip to Europe, did your parents leave the house?
