According to a recent announcement, Respawn will be pushing back the development of future Titanfall games in order to focus on Apex Legends.
Executive Producer at Respawn, Drew McCoy, wrote in a blog post: “Lastly, regarding other games in development at Respawn, it is important to understand that there are entirely separate development teams working on Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Additionally, in order to fully support Apex Legends, we are pushing out plans for future Titanfall games Apex Legends is quite successful, so it makes sense that Respawn would choose to focus on it right now. No resources from the Apex Legends team are being shifted to other titles in development here at the studio, nor are we pulling resources from the team working on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.”
Respawn acknowledges that it has “hit a few bumps along the way” since the Apex Legends launch. In turn, it’s recommitted itself to supporting the game going forward.
Respawn also says that it’s working to minimize “crunch culture” at the studio, where developers are compelled or made to work excessive hours for weeks or months at a time. So it’s unlikely the small team would support Apex Legends, work on Titanfall, and avoid crunch at the same time. Respawn seems to be taking the option that’s best for the community of Apex Legends and that of the developers working on it.
So those wanting more Titanfall anytime soon will have to wait. Most fans would agree support should be on a new Titanfall game rather than Apex Legends due to their love of the franchise. While others would say it’s a good thing Respawn is focusing on improving the stability of Apex Legends and keeping bugs at bay with major content updates to arrive with new seasons only.
At least, for now, Respawn’s two separate development teams will continue to work on Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. As the team grows, it will be better able to manage resources and maybe revisit its other projects like Titanfall Around 2020 or so hopefully.
