Last year during EA’s E3 press conference, Andrea Rene sat down with the CEO of Respawn Entertainment Vince Zampella and announced that we’ll get a singleplayer story-driven Star Wars game in the “holiday of 2019.” The title, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, was dropped and that was the last thing we heard from the game, until this past weekend during the Star Wars Celebration.
During Respawn’s Jedi: Fallen Order panel much was revealed about the story, combat, and even some new characters. The story takes place after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith; before Episode IV: A New Hope and during the “Dark Times” when the Empire executed order 66 and killed the Jedi. During this period a padawan by the name of Cal Kestis (played by Cameron Monaghan of Gotham and Shameless) escaped the massacre and is now in hiding.
While no gameplay was shown, director Stig Asmussen said that they wanted to appeal to both casual and hardcore audiences alike. He went further, stating Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order would be implementing a “Thoughtful combat” where the casual fan can get through the game while using simple combos, however, more experienced players could also dive into the deeper side of things. Here you will identify your enemies weaknesses and take them down strategically, it’s not just hack-and-slash combat.
In the Star Wars films, we see Jedi take down stormtroopers in one hit and here in Fallen Order it won’t be any different, so to counteract this problem they created a new breed of Stormtroopers called “Purge troopers.” Purge troopers are specially trained units to help deal with the Jedi’ and other force sensitive beings. They are called in when there is suspicious “Jedi related” activity and will call in the Inquisitors.
The Inquisitors, in Star Wars lore, are a highly trained force sensitive group recruited by the Empire to help deal with the leftover Jedi and other force sensitive children. In Jedi: Fallen Order it seems that our main antagonist will be the Second Sister who first appeared in Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith issue 19, written by Charles Soule, and illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli.
With EA holding the Star Wars licenses I was a bit worried about what they would force Respawn to add to the game. Most concerns were in the vein of microtransactions and loot boxes, but thankfully Vince Zampella has confirmed that there will be no multiplayer and no microtransactions at all. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC November 15, 2019.
