When it comes to war, people focus on the human cost, with little regard to the environment destroyed in the process. Tenderfoot Tactics, however, is an upcoming game that has players paying more attention to how fighting affects the environment; and how they can use it to their advantage.
Tenderfoot Tactics is a turn-based strategy RPG being developed by Badru, Michael Bell, and Isa Hutchinson. All have worked on games under the Ice Water Games label, though this one is being published under Badru’s own name.
A vast evil spirit known as The Fog eats away at the forests of the mainland, leaving goblins to seek refuge on the rocky coast. However, armed with elemental powers bestowed by the spirits of the archipelago, a band of adventurers set out to fight against the menace.
As a tactics game, Tenderfoot Tactics is inspired by the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics. You lead a party of goblins, (dressed up in clothes inspired by historical Russian dress) made up of different classes around a grid, whittling down your enemies.
One of the defining characteristics of Tenderfoot Tactics is its elemental attack system and how it interacts with the environment. The terrain and plant life of the surrounding area can be manipulated as you fight enemies. Grass can be set on fire that can spread to hit enemies, but it can also spread back to your own characters, necessitating a character with a water skill to douse it. Earth skills can raise and lower the ground, opening up visibility and blocking off enemies. As The Fog threatens the forests of the world, you can just as easily endanger them for the sake of progress.
Outside of battles, you lead your party of goblins through what is planned to be an open-world, where you can find quests and engage in the game’s narrative. Random battles can be found in forests, where feral goblins can harass you.
Tenderfoot Tactics released a combat teaser on April 13th, showing off the character classes you can use, as well as some examples of the combat. You can add Tenderfoot Tactics to your Steam Wishlist, and you can join the developers mailing list on the site linked above.
