Since I was a kid, mythology has fascinated me greatly. I enjoyed games like God of War because they took existing tales and spun them around with a fresh coat of paint. Raji: An Ancient Epic seems like it will do something similar, but with a mythology that many westerners aren’t familiar with. At this year’s Game Developer Conference, the team at Nodding Heads Games released a new trailer for their upcoming release.

For those of you who are unaware, here is the premise of Raji: An Ancient Epic, as detailed in the most recent press release. “Raji: An Ancient Epic is an action adventure game set in ancient India. Raji, a young girl is chosen by the gods to stand against the demonic invasion of the human realm. Her destiny? Rescue her younger brother and face the demon lord Mahabalasura.”

The newly released trailer (crafted specifically for GDC) showcases Raji as she travels through beautiful hand-painted environments, while using acrobatic combat skills to fight off demons and other foes. It also shows off more of the world that players will find themselves in, where gods and demons involve themselves in Raji’s journey.

The inspiration from Hindu and Balinese mythology is readily apparent as you watch the trailer, and for someone who isn’t quite so familiar with either pantheon, I am excited to see how the game unfolds. Here are the listed “key features” that were detailed in the press release:

  • Gorgeous visual art and hand-painted art style
  • A thrilling sibling story
  • Various bosses, all inspired by Hindu and Balinese mythological demons
  • Tough battles – and soothing puzzle-solving in one game!

I’m a tad bit disappointed that we have to wait until 2020 to actually see Raji in action first-hand, but after getting a better look at the game through this trailer, I have a feeling it will be worth the wait.
