As many would assume, there are and will be a lot of rumors surrounding this E3, as there almost always is. Last year, we saw Bethesda’s Fallout 76 and Rage 2 leak via Walmart Canada. Now that the PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro have all been out for more than two-three years, speculation has begun on when the next generation of consoles will release. I’ve spoken with some who believe that the PS5 will be announced later this year, and possibly even released.

Well, the “leaks” have begun to release, but are they real? Well, apparently not. An image released on Twitter by user @SUPERSONIC4k shows a large controller with the typical Sony PlayStation buttons and further exaggerations on the established PS4 controller. This image almost certainly looks similar to the gaudy Mad Catz controllers you would get as a cheap alternative in the PS2 era.

However, according to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier through the forum site Reset Era, these images are definitively a fake. In his short comment on the matter, he said, “[I] Asked a couple of people who would know. They both said it’s fake.” Which almost certainly will confer that the second image which was released by Twitter user @Tidux is also a false image.

The second image by Tidux also features a large black box with “Sony” on it, small screen, several USB ports, and the PlayStation logo under a disk drive. If I may give my personal opinion, this looks more like a printer than a console or anything else. While this could be an active design or something else, this doesn’t fit the Sony style of consoles in previous generations.

As for the release of the PS5, there is no word on when this will happen. Some have speculated that there will be an announcement before E3, to get ahead of the curve, and others believe there will be an announcement at PlayStation Experience 2019. However, if we look at the previous consoles, the trends they have set, and their lifespan, the obvious expectation would be a 2020 announcement. Furthermore, it should be stated that this may change, as Sony have begun making their announcements during PlayStation’s State of Play.

At this current moment, all we have is speculation. Until Sony confirms the validity of an image we see, we can’t say whether the rumors are true or not.
