Since the early tech demo for the PS3 back in 2005, fans have been clamoring for a Final Fantasy VII Remake. Ten years later, we got that announcement. In 2015, we got the first trailer, with an announcement that CyberConnect2 were contributing to the game. CyberConnect2 is known for making games in the Naruto and .hack franchises, and people were not exactly pleased.

This brought on some concerns that the remake wouldn’t be that good, due to CyberConnect2 only making games that score a 75% or lower on Metacritic. Two years later, in 2017, Square Enix decided to remove the studio and move the project to their in house team.

Since then we have only gotten vague progress updates. For example, back in November Director Tetsuya Nomura said, As I said at E3, development is progressing favorably.” and it was left at that. Not much is known about Final Fantasy VII Remake except the fact that it will be released episodically. This left many people confused and speculating on how splitting a single game into three parts would not only be feasible but also done well.

Today we received news that Naoki Hamaguchi, who’s been lead of development, will be promoted to Co-Directer; working along Tetsuya Nomura for the remainder of the project. Nomura has recently shipped out Kingdom Hearts 3 to critical and commercial success, shipping over five million copies in the first week of release. Naoki Hamaguchi has been working on Final Fantasy since 2006 with the release of Final Fantasy XII and has worked on Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns.

I am a big fan of the original Final Fantasy VII and was excited to see that one day we will be able to relive the magic and see how Final Fantasy VII will grow, improve, and build upon the original in new and exciting ways! I hope to see Final Fantasy VII Remake sometime in 2021.
