Final Fantasy VII is playable now on Xbox One. Weird timeline, no? Well, if you missed it and favor Microsoft over Sony, you’re in luck. If you have never experienced FFVII, here’s the lowdown. One of the most iconic games of the PlayStation One era is still being ported to this day because of its influence on narrative and character arcs in video games.
When the game begins, the world has fallen under the dominion of the Shinra Electric Power Company, a sinister corporation that has monopolized the planet’s very life force as Mako energy. It’s very modern and alludes to the classic big monster versus small hero trope that has been found in stories for ages. In the urban megalopolis of Midgar an anti-Shinra rebel group, calling themselves Avalanche, have stepped up their campaign of resistance.
Cloud Strife, a former member of Shinra’s elite SOLDIER unit now turned mercenary, lends his aid to the rebels unaware that he will be drawn into an epic battle for the fate of the planet while having to come to terms with his own lost past. It’s very much a battle that nobody knows will reach this drastic of a scale. More importantly, the people central to the conflict are relatable, making each development more and more captivating.
Not only does the game serve as a true port of the original Final Fantasy VII game, but a few extras are thrown in. This includes 3x speed mode, if you want to get through things a bit faster, the ability to turn battle encounters off and just stick to the boss fights, and a battle enhancement mode.
Sony is likely to get a full remake of Final Fantasy VII soon, but you can’t beat the classics. Xbox owners who have not experienced this game should take a look and see what all the fuss is about.
