The Nintendo Switch is becoming a family of consoles for Nintendo’s flagship platform.
It appears that one of the newest consoles will go after what is often considered to be hardcore gamers. A Wall Street Journal report states that Nintendo has an “enhanced” version of the Switch in development. This premium edition would be equipped with features, “targeted at avid video gamers.” To maximize the audience interested in the Switch, another model would aim the other direction.
For less hardcore, casual gamers, a cheaper option of the console will be offered as well. The idea behind this console is to serve as a successor to the 3DS. This likely means that the console will be smaller, possibly with a lower resolution. The story from the WSJ cites parts suppliers and software developers as sources, which is a little less than reliant. However, it is also worth noting that Nintendo has declined to comment as well.
Refreshed consoles are fairly common in the middle of a hardware lifespan. While Sony and Microsoft are constantly boosting specs inside their consoles, Nintendo seems to be covering the whole audience. Some of these “enhanced” or updated consoles feature slimmer models and more powerful options of their hardware a few years into the console’s lifecycle, but this seems to be more of a move to pinpoint the way people would be interested in playing. It’s different, but might be genius.
If a cheaper option sells it for someone, great. If a more capable console turns some PC gamers, excellent. The point stands that Nintendo wants people to experience their games. With the run the Switch is having, everyone should at least consider picking up this dynamic platform. If you love the Switch a lot, maybe all three.
