As gamers are becoming increasingly frustrated with AAA developers, their cash grabs, and their buggy products, they are turning to independent developers for their gaming fix. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the Nintendo Switch, which has an absolute ton of indie titles in its library. Now Nintendo has given us a preview of indie games coming this year to everyone’s favorite hybrid console. Here are a few highlights.
Cuphead – April 18th
Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, StudioMDHR’s run and gun action game focuses on boss fights with regular levels interspersed throughout. Play as Cuphead or Mugman (in single player or local co-op) to collect the souls of those in debt to the Devil, and in turn, save Cuphead’s soul. Enjoy graphics and sound painstakingly created with the same technology used in that era, strange worlds, new weapons, powerful super moves, and hidden secrets, while trying to pay your debt back to the devil!
Katana Zero – April 18th
Katana ZERO is a neo-noir, action-platformer developed by Askiisoft and published by Devolver Digital. It features frantically fast-paced action and instant death combat. Can you slash, dash, and manipulate time to uncover your past? Be strategic to find solutions to each level and recover your memories.
Stranger Things 3: The Game – July 4th
You play in local co-op or single player with an AI partner, as one of twelve characters from the hit Netflix series; experiencing familiar events from the show, while also uncovering Stranger Things secrets never seen before. It’s sure to be a fun adventure for Stranger Things fans and those new to the franchise.
Super Crate Box – April
Want to bring back the glory of the golden arcade age, when all that really mattered was getting on that high score list? You can with Super Crate Box! Fight endless hordes of enemies and collect every weapon crate you can, in this 16-bit delight. Tight controls, refreshing mechanics, retro art, and a hip soundtrack make Super Crate Box this a must have for arcade fans.
Cadence of Hyrule – Spring
What do you get when you merge The Legend of Zelda and the award-winning rhythm game Crypt of the NecroDancer? You get Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer, a rhythm game featuring a playable Zelda and Link, as well as familiar Hyrule creatures, items, and of course, sounds. You can check out this roguelike dungeon exploration rhythm title this spring.
