After being fired for some problematic tweets that resurfaced, James Gunn has been given the reigns once again for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Right-wing conservative accounts, including Fox News and other GOP-friendly news outlets, were quick to put the pressure on Disney to fire Gunn after reposting some old tweets that made jokes and downplayed the experience of rape and the abhorrent practice of pedophilia.
There’s no denying that the tweets were gross uses of misjudgment, but many continued to defend Gunn as a product of poor choices, not poor character. Dave Bautista, the pro-wrestler and actor who plays Drax in the Guardians movies, went so far as saying he would not return to the role if Gunn was not reinstated. It seems as if that is settled now that Disney has offered the job back to Gunn.
After being fired from Guardians 3, Gunn was hired on to direct Suicide Squad 2, the sequel to the underwhelming DC villains-go-kinda-good film that drew frequent comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie will go on with Gunn at the helm, but Will Smith has been replaced by Idris Elba in the role of Deadshot, already making this movie seem, much like the DC cinematic universe, a bit messy.
Nevertheless, the film will go on, and Gunn will then return to shoot Guardians 3 for Marvel. The film will take place after the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, which is set to close the first book on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, and send the popular films into a period of transition.
There are a lot of exciting things happening with the MCU right now, despite major stars who have been playing popular Avengers characters on the way out. The recent Fox/Disney merger means X-Men and other 21st Century Fox-owned IPs will be joining the MCU, and now it appears as if all is right with the Guardians series of films as well. Whatever your opinion of Gunn, he’s back, and he’s likely going to be a part of the next book in the MCU library.
