Visual novels are known for putting the joy of reading into the medium of video games. However, what if you wanted the joy of games in the medium of books? That’s where Boss Fight Books steps in.

Boss Fight Books is a book publisher that publishes books on video games from a variety of writers. Founded by Gabe Durham, Boss Fight Books gives a documentary-like look into video games, rambling about the history and culture that surrounded these games while their authors tell their personal experiences with the games.

The Galaga book is told through multiple short chapters, structured like the stages in the actual game. Author Michael Kimball mixes trivia tidbits with fake trivia that are indistinguishable from the cultural impact Galaga had on the world, while occasionally delving into longer chapters about his personal life surrounding the game. ZZT, by Anna Anthropy, talks about the long-lost communities for the game and covers a few specific designers, while also discussing how parts of this culture relates to her identity. Metal Gear Solid is a back-and-forth between Ashly and Anthony Burch, where they discuss their different experiences and debate on the aged aspects of the game. My personal favorite out of the collection is the Spelunky book, as it’s written by the game’s creator, Derek Yu. The Spelunky book is as much about his journey as a developer as much as it is about the game and its impact.

Humble Bundle is currently hosting a collection of Boss Fight Books under the Classic Video Games bundle, which will stick around until the 17th. For $15, you can get almost all of Boss Fight Books’ currently published works in ebook form. It’s frankly a steal, since each book individually costs about $5 as an ebook. Of course, I say almost because their book on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, written by Alex Kane, was released just yesterday.

However, if you want to have the whole Boss Fight Books collection hanging around on your reading device, the bundle also gives a 25-percent off discount code for that book in the Boss Fight Books store, on top of a general 10-percent off code (although, I can confirm that you cannot use both on the same purchase). As with any Humble Bundle, part of the proceeds goes toward a good cause. In this case, Boss Fight Books is sponsoring Girls Make Games, a series of programs designed to introduce more women to the gaming industry.
