A recent email from a Halo fan proves the point that Microsoft knows what it’s doing.

Despite a severe lack of excellent IPs this console cycle, Xbox has continued to drive innovation by pushing the envelope in two major ways. The first is much more traditional, i.e. give the people as many games as possible. That has come in the way of Game Pass, a subscription service that for $100 a year, gives players hundreds of games that are accessible so long as the subscription is active. It’s also where you can find Microsoft IPs for free download the day they launch. Playing Crackdown 3 and Forza Horizon 3 at launch without spending an additional penny has been wonderful for the brand.

The other route has been more nontraditional, and maybe under the radar of the gamers looking for nothing but games. Microsoft has pushed to put its software as many places as possible for the better part of a decade. From the launch of Microsoft Office on mobile devices to the latest announcement that Halo would be coming to Steam, Microsoft is making the right moves to get Xbox content in as many places as possible. An email from a Halo fan to Gabe Newell, co-founder and President of Valve (developer of Steam), says it all:

Phil Spencer has been a Godsend for Microsoft and Xbox, and truly is winning the PR game when it comes to industry leadership. With Reggie Fils-Aimé leaving Nintendo, Spencer may become the de facto executive of the people. A lot of that has to do with moving past the branded competition, commonly referred to as the console wars, and just embracing the medium.

PC gamers have longed for the Master Chief Collection on Steam for a long time, and to finally get it as Spencer continues to push the envelope for what Xbox has to offer, is truly a shining moment. Moving forward to the next batch of consoles, the sky is the limit with this amount of awareness for what the people want.
